Founder

As an avid surfer who enjoys exploring new places and spending time in nature, I wanted to create an essential holiday piece - elegant and functional surfsuits for women whether they're surfing or sipping poolside piña coladas...... Aware of the impact fast fashion has on our environment, I want to be part of the movement for change to more sustainable practices for the future".

  • Why TUANIS? - The founders story

    🌴 8.3982° N, 83.2814° W

When my Yoga instructor says picture yourself on your favourite beach,  this is where my mind wanders off to - Cabo Matopalo, Costa Rica. Known for its remoteness, Matapalo is a
small beach community located at the tip of the Osa Peninsula. The area mostly consists of the protected areas of Corcovado National Park - which accounts for a quarter of Costa Rica’s landmass - and was described by the National Geographic as the most biologically intense place in the world". With the world facing ecological challenges driven by decisions made for immediate economy rather than through guardianship for the future, it's a special place.

    🌴

My travels lead me there when a group of local surfers I'd met in the water suggested that I join a trip to catch the big swell that was going to be arriving. We hired a 4WD and after a quick stop to gather some food supplies, were led by a local named Scrappy on his motorbike down the rocky trails to the edge of the Jungle where it meets the Pacific Ocean. The waves turned it on - a steep take off which slowed down to a wave you could play around with. I still remember the boys laughing to each other on the way saying I hope your friend likes big waves!" and both my heart rate and excitement levels escalating. Whilst that first take off was wobbly, I held on and recovered with some wide and what I'd like to think of as graceful turns. Tuanis!" exclaimed one the boys whilst I paddled back out, a term that I later found out roughly translates to nice". The vibe in the water was that of pure joy, everyone was encouraging one other and sharing the feeling of enjoying that moment. From the water I watched the storms approaching from over at Pavones (another legendary surf spot) before paddling in as the lightning grew ever closer - urged in by calls of crazy Australian girl" from the beach. I was and remain so grateful to this group of surfers who happily shared waves and their beautiful country with me.

Returning to everyday life in Australia, I continued to reflect on why this place was so special to me. It came down to the locals connection to the environment, their guardianship and their gracious generosity when it came to sharing the waves and their beautiful country. Knowing that these things enriched my experience because they speak to the very core of my own being I wanted to embody this back home - so this is what TUANIS is all about. Taking action as guardians of our natural environment and sharing the good vibes in our everyday lives.
